The upcoming Great Lakes HamCon at Michigan International Speedway in SE Michigan is scheduled for October 7 & 8, 2017. Plans are proceeding and tickets, campsites and flea market spaces are now available for sale online. The Great Lakes HamCon is the 2017 ARRL Great Lakes Division Convention (Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky) and we will have the pleasure of having ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR with us that weekend. We are planning a banquet on Saturday evening, followed by a Wouff Hong ceremony. If you are not familiar with the Wouff Hong, it is the secret society of radio amateurs and is an enlightening and entertaining look back at the beginnings of amateur radio. The ceremony will be presented by the Ohio Section of the ARRL. Any ARRL member in good standing can participate in this most sacred event.
Go to www.glhamcon.org and click on the ‘Tickets on Sale’ link. This will take you to an MIS website where you can purchase your tickets for the event, purchase your campsite for the weekend, and purchase your flea market spaces.
The general admission for this two day event is $17 in advance and $20 at the gate. There is a current promotion running for a limited time that will reduce your admission by a buck. And a buck is a buck!
Campsites (MIS Graves Farms Campground) are sold online in two flavors: With electricity and without. Prices without are $35 for Friday and Saturday nights, and $50 for electricity (30 amp or 50 amp. The campground is across US 12, and there is a convenient tunnel under the highway and we will have trams running back and forth to the speedway infield. These trams will provide an opportunity for you to transport that heavy boat anchor that you have lusting after back to your campsite!
You can also purchase your flea market spaces (12 ft wide x 20 ft deep) on pit road for $40 per space. There will be spaces up and down pit road on both sides with a 20 ft aisle between. The spaces are being sold via telephone because of the variables involved such as multiple adjacent spaces which is convenient for clubs and groups of friends.
The spaces are being sold from the center outwards with the center spaces being closest to all the action. Pit road is over 1/4 mile long and the spaces at either end are a long ways from the center activity areas. The best spots sell quickly!
I think you will find the interface with the MIS staff to be a prompt, efficient and pleasant experience. As of today, we are 134 days to HamCon…..This sounds like a long time, but in reality it is like the day after tomorrow!
Your ARRL staff from Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky are all anxious to see you at Michigan International Speedway in October!
